My Musical History

After reading about Brendan Kelly, who is part of the band that got me into punk rock, playing with his former bands a couple of weekends ago, I got to thinking about my own musical journey. I don't think I've ever really wrote out all I've done musically, so why not now. It was great to check out videos of him playing with Slapstick, the Broadways, solo acoustic stuff, and of course the Lawrence Arms. How often would you be able to do something like that? I've had ideas brewing about that myself, and need to talk to the respective former members about doing that. That's a reminder to myself!

So anyways, where did I start out musically? I can remember being in first grade, and wanting to do piano. I had a nun as my first piano teacher, and I still can recall that day when we got a piano, and I could play it at home. I kept up with piano throughout grade school. As I got into the older grades, I would learn a musical piece for a contest, and play that only. That is something I regret about my piano lessons. I know a little bit about chords and what not, but I can't totally sit down to play something without a piece of music. I can learn that piece, and play it memorized though given the opportunity. But I'm not the whole overall piano player. I'd like to pick it up at some point, but just haven't made that push for it.

Going on from piano, I turned to the trumpet in fifth grade. Best memory there was we had 13 trumpets in fifth grade, and one trumpet player in sixth grade, go figure who stuck around. I loved playing the trumpet. Those days of hurt lips, and getting braces that I needed to get used to playing with. It was a good time. Yet again, I never did make up that great trumpet player, but I was good enough. I played through high school and through college. My senior year of high school, I did take some lessons, and even played a contest. Got a first place in the division I was in, and was happy with that. Who knows if I put that extra practice in, how good I could have been? Like I said, I played through college, and end up playing in the Butler marching band, and the basketball pep band. This was someone who never did marching band in high school, so you can imagine how lost I was when I got that drill chart, and was told to get from here to there. Another memory there was getting whacked in the mouth by a girl going backwards, and I was heading forwards. She said she was wondering what my dirty look was all about! Good times in the band. I learned so much, and hope I progressed a lot in those years of playing. Haven't played since I graduated in 05, but yet again another thing I think I could pick up and get back to playing.

So what do I play now?? That would be the guitar, my love! Had a guitar sitting around the house at 18, and decided I wanted to play it. Saw the Blink 182 show that year as well, and thought I want to start a band. Ended up forming Faze Factor with mr. doug shank and mr. stephen brown, and later added mr. tim shank to the fold there. We played for people Labor Day weekend in 01 I believe. the memories are hazy here! sorry about that. We played in my family's basement. Doug and I were part of a talent show band that covered Good Charlotte! Oh the humanity! haha. Yes I listened to Good Charlotte before they sold out. Faze Factor ended up recording a cd when we had tim a part of the band in my basement. Wires everywhere, my computer hooked up down there, a guy helping us out, and just busting through the songs. We went to Ritters to do the cover art, and had a release party for it. Those were the days of playing. I will never forget those days, and I think those guys will always think about them as well. There were years I didn't have any band going until 2009. Tim and I were playing together a tad and realized we needed a drummer. Tried out a couple of options, but nothing was sticking. Then I called up Mr. Joey Gist, who I had played Rock Band with about drumming for us. Yep he started on Rock Band, and became our drummer. We worked together and got originals going. Ended up at the recording studio to record six songs in six hours. I was the producer on this, so I was playing my guitar and getting everything sorted out for the recording. I cut the vocals in the basement of the house I was living in. And I mixed all those songs for the six song EP. It was a very engaging task, but one I'm very proud of. We put discs together for a party at said basement, and had a good turnout for that. We would go on to play at Birdys and Melody Inn. I never thought I would get out to play for people, and it's something I want to get back to doing. Nothing beats when you're playing a song, and you can see someone singing the song back to you. That's one of the biggest accomplishments I've had to date.

Where am I? Still looking to get playing again. Just finding that right mix of musicians to get this crazy thing of playing in a band going again. I've had thoughts about doing it myself, and just me and the guitar. I don't like that too much. You need that other creative energy. You need those other people all working towards the common goal. But hey I know if I want to do the wrestling concept album, it will be by myself!! But I want to be out and playing shows, and telling people, yes I'm in a band. And Mellencamp isn't the only musician who can make it from the small town.

Sad goodbye to the Big Man- Clarence Clemons passes away

News Story about the passing

Sad to see him go away.  Clarence was a focal point of the E Street Band.  He could blow that saxophone like nothing, and who knew that rock and roll would use it so much?  I won't write much about it, but here are the two videos that I will always think when I remember him.

Album I've Been Digging 2

One of those albums that really came together and said something.  This band had a great maturation process from their previous album to this one.  The sound production is way better thanks to recording at the Blasting Room with Bill Stevenson. He just knows how to get something great out of a band.  With the Swellers, that's probably what they needed.  They expanded their sound into more of this melodic punk rock sound than just the poppy punk sound they were creating previously.  Looks like big things are in store for this band, and congrats to them.
What a difference one album can make.  Just listening to "Good for Me" in the early stages, you can hear the maturity of the band's sound. It feels more focused in a driving rock phase.  The songs are very uplifting, and a bit of a difference from their previous release "My Everest."  Maybe recording the latest album at Bill Stevenson's Blasting Room Studios gave the band a greater concentration and helped produce this sound they have going on now.  They really set the bar high for "pop punk" if you want to use that label. These tracks tend to separate better on their own as well from the earlier sound of the Swellers.  It looks like they're on top of their game.

The Canal- Make a Mess Review

I got this copy of the Canal's "Make a Mess" to review and give my thoughts on.  From listening to it, it's a very interesting mix of rock with some hip hop vocals.  Luckily the hip hop vocals are delievered in a smooth manner, and not screamed at me, which I always appreciate.  The singing vocals remind me of Coldplay and some Maroon 5, not my cup of tea, but it fits the style of rock music this band is creating.  After reading the band's bio, it mentions how this is an album that came together after the idea of walking around the canal downtown where couples will get together, and enjoy the company. That's a great way to think about this album.  What to impress a lady with some music?  Want to get that "mood" going?  Want to take a trip downtown and walk the canal?  Then play the Canal's "Make a Mess."  It's very good at blending this unique sound of alternative rock with hip hop vocals.  To me the stand out track is Lemons. It has probably my favorite line in the whole album "take this advice, from brother to brother, get over one girl, get on top of another." Definitely give the Canal a listen, and support the local music scene here in Indy.  Good things are happening, and I know these bands would appreciate the love!

Shameless 16- What if a music selection became a movie?

With the talk of an American Idiot movie, I will try my hand at presenting a movie idea for some music albums that I've loved and enjoyed. That album is set for a movie, but I decided to branch out and really take a look at some albums that might not be "rock opera" like, but I still felt like could be movie like.  Suggested Listening "Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen, "Pinkerton" by Weezer, "Scrambles" by Bomb the Music Industry, "59 Sound" by Gaslight Anthem, and "Gold Record" by Bouncing Souls.

Concept Albums

While downloading the latest F'd Up album, David Comes to Life, it got me thinking about the idea of a concept album. I have thought my own idea as to what I would do with a concept album, and I would love to do a wrestling themed album.  That's the good thing about the concept album, it can be themed or it can be like a story tied together.  If you listen to American Idiot by Green Day, that is one of the more storied type albums, but it's a concept in itself.  I know that turned a lot of the older Green Day fans off by having that type of album, but myself I enjoyed it. I think that Green Day didn't stray too much from their typical "punk" sound, but more expanded upon it. I didn't care for the idea of taking it to Broadway, but it was pretty much set up for something like that.

Looking at the history of the concept album, it's interesting to note that it had it's start in jazz.  Come Fly with Me by Frank Sinatra was viewed as a musical adventure across the world.  That's a pretty cool idea, and one I didn't realize was prevalent.  Pet Sounds is another concept type album that is all themed around Brian Wilson's state of mind at the time.  He also went to follow up with Smile, but that never saw the light of day until many years later.  Then we come to Sgt. Peppers, which we know is a concept of another band that the Beatles wanted to portray.  The Who Sell Out by the Who was viewed as a pirate radio broadcast complete with radio jingles in between songs.  Tommy would later come out by the Who as an album of a complete story with characters and a plot to follow along.  The Who could be cited as the rock album kings since they would later complete two more rock operas.

A concept album to me is a cool way to put together an album as long as it's done in that vein.  Just like I enjoy a good story that fills out the characters and story lines that is how the concept album should be done.  Who knows maybe you will get the privilege of listening to my own "Flint stone Drop" by Steve "the Rock" Flint stone

Here we are at 100!!!

I thought the best way I could go about this post was THANKING everyone who has viewed and be a part of this blog.  Right now I'm not playing music, but I am getting to that hopefully soon.  I alway thought if I can't play music, why not write about it? I'm witty enough to put together some thoughts about music, and what better avenue than a blog. I never envisioned reaching out to musicians that I was listening to on my itunes and getting them to email back some interview type questions.  I never thought I would get to blogging this much!  I've had a successful run since I really picked it up in Jan. I've had this blog for over a year, but have been more active in the year 2011.  I've talked to great musicians, written about great music, had great podcasts going along with it, it's just been awesome.  I hope you've loved reading it!  And like I always have said, if you want to be a part of this in any way, even it's just a short paragraph of your own thoughts about a music subject, BY ALL MEANS get in touch.  I'd love to expand this out and get as many people involved that I can.  I'm not that egoistical that it needs to be all me.  I love talking music with other people and getting those discussions happening. I'll be trying to figure out how I can do that more. Look for more interviews along the way.  Look for the retro reviews to happen.  Look for new music to talk about.  Fun and exciting podcasts!  Nowhere to go with this but up!  Just one final thought that helps sum up this blog post:

Take a Chance

Here's another song I had going on back in September.  Just me and the acoustic guitar.  Talking girls of course.

Voices in my Head

This is something I was working on last night, and rerecorded today feeling very good about it.  It's rough and rumbly just the way I envisioned.

500 Greatest Songs of All Time

 Easier List to Sift Through

500 Greatest Songs of all Time Presented By Rolling Stone

I thought Rolling Stone had done something like this before, but here it is their list of the 500 Greatest Songs.  Once again, their list form on the website is not the best because you literally have to click through the 500 songs. I would love just to see the list in a text form, and then there could be a link to see what the thoughts are about it.  But that's just my thinking.  As far as the list goes, the top ten is solid I think.  Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" makes the number nine spot, which makes sense to me.  It really signaled that change in music in the beginning of the 90's.  It helped bring an alternative sound to music, and was an anthem for teenagers who needed that anthem.  Next up was "Hey Jude" by the Beatles.  For some reason I can't really enjoy this song that much. I think it just drags on, and I know people love singing along to that end refrain of "Hey Jude."  But overall, I never felt like it was one of the better Beatles songs.  "Johnny B. Goode" is a great number eight song, and it's truly a song about rock and roll stardom. It's talking about how this guy turns into a sensation overnight.  And who can forget Marty McFly rockin' it out in Back to the Future.  Chuck Berry become a rock star after this song hit it for him.  "Good Vibrations" makes the top ten list and that was my top pick for a summer song.  This song came during the recording of Pet Sounds because the Beach Boys needed to get that type of sound back.  Pet Sounds was quite the departure from the classic Beach Boys sound, and I'm sure this is why they recorded Good Vibrations.  Respect by Aretha Franklin is our next cut up to talk about.  This is an interesting song to me because it was written by Otis Redding, but women take it as their anthem.  So there you go women, a man wrote an anthem for you.  Take that for what it's worth. :)  The top four songs are "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye, a plea for peace in my mind, "Imagine" by John Lennon, another song trying to make a plea for peace,  "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones, a great rock and roll tune that can get you going at times, and finally "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan. An interesting choice to me because I can't get behind Dylan stuff.  His voice just annoys me, but I can see where he's a big influence in music. He was creating songs that could get people united behind an idea.  He made quite the splash when he went electric during a show once.  But truly did Rolling Stone pick this song because it has the words "Rolling Stone" in it?? You can find their own thoughts on it right here Bob Dylan "Like a Rolling Stone"  Looking at what they're talking about, it is very cool there was no sheet music, and it was just a jam that turned into something special.

That's about how I go about my own songwriting.  Just start with something small, and work it until you can get it bigger.  (that's what she said)  Sometimes the best songs are written that way.  You don't need to be technical with rock and roll.  You have to feel it. You have to enjoy it.  You have to love music.  You can make music whatever way you want, just make it for the right reason, which is creating songs for people to enjoy and get behind.
