Fun Sunday Night- Rocking out with Elway
I decided to venture out to the Vollrath Tavern for some punk rock goodness. I got there early for some weird reason and had to sit around wondering if I should go out and do something and come back haha. Luckily the guitarist from Elway came over and talked to me for a few. He even offered me a drink, but I'm no drinker so I quietly declined. The first two bands that went on weren't bad, but weren't good. Elway was worth the wait. The songs were just hard and tight like a punk rock band should be. The drummer was making drumming look so easy as he tore into the drums. The music would have been really great if there was a crowd singing along with the band. They still played out all they could to all ten of us there. Yep that's right about ten people were there. Maybe next time the band stops in town a better crowd can come out and see what Colorado punk rock is all about. Looking forward to getting their cd in the mail this week, and I'll have a review posted up about that soon.

It's Less Than Jake Friday
With the dvd that's coming out showcasing all kinds of live Less Than Jake footage, I decided to give them a blog post. I've seen this band before in a live show and it was just awesome. There was a big barrage of confetti at some point, and the songs are just great live. It's such a different atmosphere when you see the band live. You can just see they love playing live and truly enjoy each other. I think this lineup they've had has been together the majority of the time they have been a band. Other than one bad cd, I truly enjoy the band's catalog. Some of the songs just say so much in a short time. Here's one of my favorite songs "History of a Boring Town"
"Just talked to this girl,
Used to live, yea, on my street. (woah-oh-oh)
After all these years you're here,
And you remember me. (woah-oh-oh)
She said her old boyfriend
Packed up and headed back east.
But she always knew some day...
He would go.
She just got a new job
And she's down to her last. (woah-oh-oh)
So let's take a drink and never think, yea
Here's to the past. (woah-oh-oh)
She said it's so funny,
How life runs out so fast.
It's just another wasted day.
A boring life in a boring town
With the same old crowd. (woah-oh-oh)
When I used to say, that I'd never say
That I'm rotting here today. (woah-oh-oh)
With that same old crowd
That's always been around.
And I always thought I'd be
The first to go.
That same old crowd,
That drags me down.
Another day in a boring town.
That same old crowd,
That brings me down.
A boring life in a boring town.
Just talked to this girl,
Used to live, yea, on my street.
After all these years you're here,
And it's still just you and me.
Sometimes I can't believe after all these years
I just think I'll never leave here.
She said it's so funny,
How life runs out so fast.
Let's take another drink,
And here's to the past.
That same old crowd,
That drags me down.
Another day in a boring town.
That same old crowd,
That brings me down.
A boring life in a boring town.
And remember when they looked through you,
And then looked past me.
We were the ones they said would always leave.
So when you go, just think of me,
Think of me. (woah-oh-oh)
[Interlude Thingy]
A boring life in a boring town
With the same old crowd. (woah-oh-oh)
When I used to say, i'd never say
That I'm rotting here today. (woah-oh-oh)
With that same old crowd,
That's always been around.
And I always thought that...
Yea how we always thought that..
And I always thought I'd be,
The first to go!
A boring life,
A boring town. (woah-oh-oh)
A boring life,
A boring town. (woah-oh-oh)
A boring life,
A boring town!"
I wanted to post up the lyrics so you can sing along. You're welcome! Also I think this song truly describes what I feel sometimes. Just picking up and leaving. Heading into a new town to meet new people to have new experiences. I think you end up always coming back to where you belong. So I can end up checking out someplace new, but I would probably end up back here in Indy. I do enjoy living here because I'm definitely comfortable and I know most things about the town. I know all the people here and I usually see people out and about where I can go. I hang out with a great group of friends who I know would be there for me, and I want to be there for them. So I do appreciate the same old "boring" town and the same old "boring" life.

Shameless Plug 13- Summer Music Blowout
Last week I spent time discussing summer movies, but we all know this is a music site, and what kind of music fan would I be if I wasn't discussing summer music. This week will also delve into summer shows. It's all about the summer time!

Dan from Real Friends talks music
Another band that I saw was following me on twitter, I gave them a listen, and really enjoyed the first song I heard. So I decided to get in touch and give this band some love. Gotta support chicago pop punk stuff.
Who do we have here talking to us?
I'm Dan Lambton and I sing in a pop-punk band called Real Friends from the south side of Chicago.
So let's get started, what are you doing musically right now?
Last month we put out our first ep This is Honesty and next month we're gonna put out a song as a free download. We're gonna start writing some more songs over the summer and put out a single and a hopefully a split. Either way we're stoked!
How did you come together as a band?
We all met through our old bands playing shows together. Dave, Aaron and I actually tried to get a band together a little over a year ago and that kind of fizzled out. I got a call from Kyle and he told me that he'd been writing with Dave and asked if I'd come by and try things out to see if I'd be a good fit. I showed up for practice and they had Aaron come and it just kinda fit together pretty well.
What got you into music?
I got a bass in 8th grade because I was really into blink-182 and Mark Hoppus was basically my idol. I played in a band in high school and that's how I met Dave and Aaron.
What bands have influenced you?
Blink was the first band I really fell in love with. Other bands I'm into are The Wonder Years, Such Gold, Circa Survive, City and Colour, Person L and a whole shit load of other bands. As a whole, we take a lot of influence from The Wonder Years, New Found Glory, Man Overboard, You Me & Everyone We Know, The Starting Line, Fireworks and a lot of other pop-punk bands. We try to keep an open mind and we all listen to a bunch of bands.
What do you think of the music scene especially in Chicago?
It could be a lot better. Since the economy is in a slump a lot of kids aren't able to make it to shows to support local bands. It's kind of a discouraging because there'll be some shows where the lineup isn't organized too well and some bands end up playing to like ten people while some shows only have ten people show up.
Anything that could improve the music scene?
I think that bands can be a lot more hands on with promotion and constantly talk and connect to potential and current fans. Local shows can sometimes be overbooked and $10 or more in some cases. DIY shows have a lot of benefits, and Kyle put one together last month at a hall in our area for $3. We have another one coming up at a bowling alley we go to all the time that's gonna be $5, and I think these kinds of shows are affordable and have potential to be intimate and a ton of fun. And since the bands put these shows together, it requires the bands playing to put more effort into promoting and work together to make sure the show goes as amazing as possible. Kyle plans on booking a lot more shows like that in our area, which I'm totally stoked on.
Best live shows you've attended.
I saw Good Old War a year and a half ago in Dekalb and they played three songs on stage and decided to play the rest of their set in the crowd. Since they're a folk band and very acoustic driven, not to mention extremely talented, they were able to pull this off amazingly. It was really intimate, energetic and just plain fun. So it would either be that or when Set Your Goals came to Elgin with Comeback Kid and The Wonder Years. There was just constant in your face energy, singing along and just everything a good pop-punk/hardcore show should be.
If you've played a live set, what's a good live set story you have?
We haven't played too many shows with Real Friends, but we have a gang vocal sing along at the end of Monday that the crowds have sung along to. That was definitely awesome to see.
What bands would you tour with if you could?
Any of the bands that were mentioned before as our influences. Since a lot of people listen to a lot of different genres it would be cool to play with hardcore bands like Comeback Kid or some of the poppier bands like YMAEWK or Hellogoodbye. But that's totally out of our league at this point.
Final Word/ Parting Shot!

Ian from Cheap Girls sits down for a fireside chat!
I checked out the band, Cheap Girls, when they played with Against Me a few months back, and really enjoyed the sound of the band. I thought the guitarist had something cool going on, so I thought why not shoot him some interview questions, and here's what he had to say.
Right now what are you doing music wise?
Currently, I'm writing the 3rd Cheap Girls LP which I hope to have finished by the end of the summer so we can record it in September or October. I've talked to a few friends about doing a couple of other projects once I wrap that up but who knows what will actually materialize.
What got you playing music?
Just being a fan of music as a kid, mostly. Wanting to be a part of songs that people listened to, playing the guitar, things like that. I was just always attracted to music in every sense. As long as I can remember, it's been one of the key forces in my life.
Who are your biggest influences?
The Lemonheads, Elvis Costello, Green Day, and so on. I mean, there are tons and tons. I listen to music all the time and that all influences me overall.
If you could tour with anyone, who would it be?
I'm really looking forward to this tour we have coming up with Bomb the Music Industry just because they're such close friends and I know it'll be a good time. I'd love to tour with Against Me again just because we had such a great time with those guys as well. We tour pretty consistently so these days I really just look forward to being around friends to keep myself grounded when I'm away so much.
What do you think of the music scene right now?
Well, there are certainly a lot of sides about that one.
What could be better about it?
Again, that's kind of a big question and I'm not sure I can really make an overall statement to sum that one up. I don't see myself as the one to say.
Any final words you'd like to share.
Thanks for your time!

Strung Out's "Lost Motel"
I made a facebook status update about this song last night, and wanted to flesh out a bit what I was thinking about this song.
The music is just playing here so you can listen to the song while reading what I'm thinking about it. Also I'll post the lyrics because they are saying so much.

A picture on the wall, like a postcard with a better view of,
all things absent from Room 209.
Diana sips from an empty glass of hope she poured last night,
The clouds above reflect the shape of all she's gotta leave behind.
We always think there's something better in the place we are not,
In dreams the reality of it all,
Nobody's happy where they're at and we all wanna be somebody else
Another scribbled stationary book of lies,
another staged confession that just goes unheard,
Harry Detroit in 304 made one last promise now,
I'm going out without a trace a vanishing act before your eyes
Nobody wants what they have got and what they got is not enough,
in dreams the reality of it all,
a lighter shade of green the grass maybe if I believe it so, then I'll be home.
Here I go uncertain that if what I find is what I want,
the best for me is everything,
I reach for the same as what I'm running from,
I guess I'll never know
Is it the struggle that we live for,
is it keeping us alive to breathe to want, to know, to love Just one more day,
Just one more way
So here I go.......I'm half the way to home.....
For me this song just rings out because I am always thinking I could be somewhere better, and that the grass is greener. I haven't been content now for a while, and I'm trying to get there. I do try to take life as it comes, but I keep thinking there's something more out there for me, and I don't want that whole "typical" life. I want to be out and doing something with my life. I don't want to just go to a job, do it, come home, go to sleep, and do it all over again. Yes I know that's probably what will end up happening. But I also know that if I really look for it, I can find that career or job that will challenge me, and make me feel like I am doing something worthwhile with my life. Once I get that going, things will turn out and I know that I've lived my life the way I should. For now I'll keep searching and keep looking for that thing I'm trying to find. I'll still be taking each day as it comes, and not trying to plan out too much. I'll try to truly get out and do different things, and not be a homebody. I'll be happy with where I am at, and happy with where I will be going. Life is a journey is something I have to keep telling myself. No sense in rushing to the finish line right?
Evan from Ocean By July stops for a chat.
Another band I found on twitter and wanted to pick their brains about music, and what they're doing music wise.
Tell us the history of your band.
We've all been playing music for years. As fans and lovers of music when we were young, we wanted to get involved in actually playing. We've been jamming together for years but our band really became serious in Fall 2009 when we relocated to St. Louis
Do you tour? Any great tour story?
Final words you'd like to share. Thanks so much for the interview! Thanks for taking the time to read! Make sure to add us on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, pick up our EP on iTunes or BandCamp and watch for our new EP dropping this summer! And make sure to come hang out with us on tour this summer!
Love,

We are actually going on our first national tour this summer. Check out the tour dates on our Facebook,MySpace, etc when they're posted and make sure to come hang out when we're in your city!
What do you think of the music scene?
Today's music industry is in bad shape. It's based on fake artists with fake songs designed solely to sell. I realize that it is an industry, but I think people forget about the word "music" in front of it. Trust me, as an artist I understand that we need to make money but not at the expense of our art. I'm so sick of turning on the TV or radio and hearing a "song" with a repetitive electronic beat and complete lack of chord progression and heart. I want to see our music industry shift back to celebrating those with true talent rather than those who can sell the most.
Love,
OBJ
Travis from Brother John
Sent a few questions to the avant garde folk band that got in touch with me and this is what they had to say about music.
What are you doing musically right now? Is the band playing shows?
What bands have influenced your band?
Is there a band you would tour with if you could choose any band?
Any good live set story to share?
Check out their music at Brother John Bandcamp!
What are you doing musically right now? Is the band playing shows?
We're taking a break this summer from playing live shows to concentrate on writing more music. We're hoping to spend some time in a cabin somewhere with a few guitars and see what happens. We're also looking at playing a few smaller, 3 piece shows with just guitars and vocals, but, one of our singers is in Chicago this summer, so, we're not sure if that'll be possible or not.
Oh man, that's a good question. Definitely Balmorhea. Austin is brothers with their bass player, and we completely love everything they do. It was the first time we became aware that instrumental folk music was even possible to pull off, or that anyone would be receptive to it. We also do a lot of scavenging...we'll take the best parts of different bands and figure out how we can translate what their doing into our sound. Fleet foxes harmonies, Dirty Projector's vocalizations, Sufjan Stevens orchestration, Bon Iver's sense of space and openness...we've taken a lot from those guys.
On the classical side, John Adams and Morton Feldman have been big influences...and Ravel's string quartet is easily one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written, although I'm not sure how much it has made its way into our sound.

Touring with Balmorhea would be a dream...they're all such incredibly nice and talented people and just a joy to spend time with. In a dream world we could open for Jonsi and maybe use some of our instruments to help fill out his band. I love the idea of going on tour for a band as an opener, but also using our instruments to help re-do some of their songs in a live setting...I think that'd be really cool.
This is going to sound cheesy, but, I really love each and every show we play. Just getting the opportunity to share what we've created and to give that to our friends is a real gift. I think it's also a real cathartic experience in many ways. Our whole culture is always racing and demanding things at a quicker pace and at a higher volume...to spend 30 minutes creating reflective, semi-repetitive music is really cleansing somehow, and watching the audience experience that transformation is really rewarding.
What do you think of the music scene?
I love it. There are a lot of people lamenting the fact that people aren't buying what the big companies are putting out, and that the record industry is dying, but, in a lot of ways that's okay with me. Music as a commodity is a weird thing. It's meant to be shared and experienced in a group setting, as a make-shift community. If the decline of the 'industry' means that instead of buying a few major label artists, people spend time in their local bars listening to the music their friends make...then I think that's a good thing. We should be creating, and we should be sharing that with each other.
Final words and parting shot you would like to give.
Thanks so much for giving us a listen and for exposing people to new sounds and new ideas...

Vinnie from Less Than Jake answers some questions for me!
I needed to get in touch with Vinnie from Less Than Jake when I had to make sure I was cool to play some Gamits song on my podcast, and then I got to thinking why not shoot him a few blog questions and get his quicks thoughts. Less Than Jake have been a favorite band of mine, and they have an awesome DVD coming out in June I believe that will be a great live one any die hard fan will love. It's featuring some full album shows they've done and concert footage from the past. Definitely keep an eye out for it, so here we go a few questions with Vinnie.
Brief introduction of yourself if you don't mind.
I'M VINNIE, I PLAY IN LESS THAN JAKE, I PLAY DRUMS, I WRITE LYRICS, I
TAKE MY DOG OUT, I LIKE TACO'S.
What's going on with Less Than Jake right now? I heard you guys are doing an EP.
WE ARE IN THE STUDIO AND RECORDING SOME SONGS, MAYBE AN EP, MAYBE NOT.

Since you're playing the Warped Tour, any good Warped Tour memories?
THERES ALWAYS GREAT WARPED MEMORIES, FIGURE 8 CIRCLE PITS IN BOSTON,
LIGHTNING STRIKING IN CHICAGO, WATCHING NOFX EVERYDAY, HEARING DAG
NASTY STORIES FROM BRIAN BAKER.
How did that Anthology Dvd come about?
WE DID 6 FULL ALBUM SHOWS YEARS AGO AND WHEN AND HAVING THIS ANTHOLOGY
HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE PLAN.
What do you think about running a record label?
COMPLICATED, SHITTY, ENERGIZING, AMAZING - IT ALWAYS!
Awesome guy and so glad he took the time out of his BUSY schedule to shoot me back with his answers. Look for Less Than Jake on this year's Warped Tour and wherever else they might pop up.

| The band "rocking" out |
They do have an ep available here Brother John Music so feel free to give them your own listen.
Let's get to the music. It starts with a short "Prelude" tinkering with some guitar, piano, and even a gong in the background. Little flute parts come up here and there. Just a very layered piece. It leads right into "We Now Believe" that starts with an acoustic guitar and some choral type singing. Lots of Ahhh's singing with the guitar. You can even hear some clarinet playing there. Then the song picks up a little bit with a bass coming in and the drums making their entrance. Lots of little sounds going on as well. Definitely avaunt gard. Jumps back into just the guitar making its run. This music you could definitely have playing in the background of whatever you doing. It's enjoyable and just there to keep you from hearing nothing but the thoughts in your head. And believe me sometimes I gotta get the thoughts out of my head! But that's a whole other story. Back to the music. A slow piece to finish up this song. "Stanley Messenger" is playing up next. Some vocals start the song off and it reminds me of a Shins type song. This one is picked up a bit from the last song. Strings and piano is playing along with other things that I'm having a hard time picking out what they are! Sorry about that. There's a little bit of chorus singing in this song. "rebuild restore" is the mantra that leads into "rejoice" I'm picturing a video of people just coming out of their house to all join in singing this song and enjoying the sunny day that we're having today. Maybe they're preparing for something big. This song definitely has that feel of building up to something that you're waiting for. Next up, we have an "Interlude" where some man is talking sounds like a scientist of some sort. Or person predicting something, maybe he's predicting the Rapture...had to get that in here somewhere. Full of strings playing to set up this middle of the road piece. I feel better calling this songs pieces because they are more of that. "Time is a Mysterious Thing" is our piece swaying us to the slow beat of the music. Another piece that makes you feel like you're waiting for that one thing. Maybe hope for something better. I keep picturing all sorts of visuals in my mind that are hard to portray through text, but once you hear this music, you will understand what I'm saying here. Little bit of chaos in the piece, but slows back down into the finale. Now we have "the Great Era of Stars" where I could see a warm summer evening and you're actually laying in the grass looking up at the sky thinking about what life is all about. Trying to figure out where you are and who you are. Is this the life you want? Are you with someone? Are you alone in this world? All kinds of things you would think about if you're just laying down, eyes closed, listening to this piece, and enjoying the peace that is a summer night. We are at the end "Postlude" where the journey is complete. That's what this music does feel like a journey. You see that light at the end of the tunnel, and you know this is the end. And the final thing you hear is a tape clicking off and that's something definitely as a great closing to the art. Hope you've enjoyed this and will give this band a listen. As always let me know your thoughts on it, if you have anything you're thinking.

Face to Face is back!

Got my hands on the new Face to Face "Laugh Now, Laugh Later" and figured I'd give you guys my thoughts on it. Another live review, so the music is playing, and my thoughts will be swaying. This is the newest album for Face to Face since 2002's "How To Ruin Everything." I thought that was in 2004 or 2005, man it has been a while for new Face to Face. They did take a hiatus there for a couple of years, but they're back and playing shows and making music, so that's awesome. Let's see what "Laugh Now, Laught Later" is all about.
We kick the album off nice and strong with "Should Anything Go Wrong." A great punk rock song to get the party started. The vocals really sound solid, and the band just sounds very tight. It's not like they've been gone from the scene. Next up is "It's Not All About You." Another gritty punk rock song. A song focusing on not being so self centered. I think this would speak to some people in the punk rock scene who try to be so elitist about the music. A cool break down bridge part in the middle of this song. Just sounds like Face to Face is really back on their game, and it's awesome to hear them playing music again. One of those bands that has always done it the right way. "The Invisible Hand" is rocking out. It's got some cool "whoa's" going on. The bass has a great sound going on in this song as well. More of a "mellow" song for this album so far. Another awesome bridge section too. Seems like something Face to Face really wanted to work on in this album. "Bombs Away" is up next. Kicks off with a great bass line. And we pick up the pace again in this song. I will say Trever's vocals are solid and he can sing with such a great pace. "Blood in the Water" another quality punk rock song playing. I can't say it enough the band just feels tight and that's awesome. The production value on this album is amazing. Everything sounds clear and dead on. A good head boppin' chorus that you can get behind. And you can't go wrong with a punk rock ending. "What You Came For" is our next track to visit. I usually try to pick something out and really listen to that part on songs, and on this song I love the drums. They are kicking and keeping this song going along. But then again if you have some great head phones, listen for the bass runs that are happening. I just now took note of them, man they're awesome little nuances to the song. "I Don't Mind and You Don't Matter" that's something I wouldn't mind telling people from time to time. Gruff vocals are delivered on this song. Some back up vocals just help power the chorus not that there needs much back up. A simple chorus but it rocks and kicks you in the face. Great song there. Next up, we have "Stopgap" and we have some guitar and drums to start out. A swingin' punk rock song if that can be a genre. Definitely a return to form for Face to Face, not that they needed to do that, but it's definitely going to get fans rocking again. "All For Nothing" is a sweet punk rock love song. It's talking about giving up stuff to be with that special someone. <AWWW insert birds chirping and cupid shooting an arrow> Is there room for "love" songs in punk rock?? Sure why not? As long as it's not that cheesy. Simple and short song that doesn't take much to figure out what's going on. Punk rock style as is the standard for Face to Face with a little rocking guitar solo in there. "Pushover" is singing about you guessed it...being a push over, and letting people walk over you. Why make a song that's all metaphorical and just get to the point right? That's how I try to write my own songs, and love when a band writes a song that you know what they want to say. "Under the Wreckage" is the closer for this album. And quite the rockin' finish. Gotta love when an album leaves you wanting more as well. "I keep looking, I can't find you anywhere" I am loving that lyric. You know how friends get away from you and you're not sure why. Or maybe you screwed up a relationship and you want to piece it back together, but that doesn't always happen. What an awesome closing song for this album.
Overall, it's just a great album, and like I said a return to form for Face to Face.

Bobby Generic - Famous Nobody
I got a message from this artist on and decided to give him a listen, and let him have some love on my blog. While this style of music isn't my forte at all, I did enjoy this. I thought the vocals really matched the intensity level of the music sampling in the background. I liked the way the vocals are delievred in a tone not screaming at me, but more in a singing type tone. There's some cool female vocals in the bridge part, and I thought this was just a well done "hip hop" song. Hopefully this guy can get to where he wants to go.

Happy May 16th
This is such a great song, and my introduction to punk rock. I remember hearing it on a Tony Hawk game, and thinking I want to pick up that cd. I picked up "Let's Talk about Feelings" by Lagwagon and just fell in love with that cd. Lagwagon really plays a sweet style of punk rock. I remember seeing them as well in Cincy, and Joey Cape is one of my favorite front man. Such a short guy but full of pep and has a great voice.

Abstract in the Sky
I got contact by this guy to check out his stuff, and give him some love on my blog, so here we go. Straight from his website this is how the music is described.
"The Orlando-based musician known as Abstract in the Sky has been creating music and producing beats as early as 2001. Influenced by such musicians as DJ Krush, Venetian Snares, and Massive Attack, Abstract crosses genres without looking back. With music ranging from eclectic, chaotic breakbeats to lush and seductive acid jazz, Abstract continues to attempt to push and change breakbeat and electronic music into something more meaningful and thematic. Carefully crafting songs based around metaphorical allegories or universal themes, the music changes itself into something more. His first full-legnth album, Midnight in Alaska, is set to release in the summer of 2010."
Just some great background music for you while you're hanging out. I could see this being playing in a dark club, and people dancing to the beats. Something different for me to experience, but I like to think I give most music a chance. I hope you''ll give it a listen, and tell me what you think.
