Shameless Plug 9- April Showers Bring May Flowers

Thanks to punknews.org for the news of the week of April 24th, 2011.
With April down to the end, I wanted to take a look at the world of music for the month.  If you're a member of the Foo Fighters, it was an awesome month. New cd out, new documentary out, garage tour, and just a lot of rocking.  Record Store Day happened this month, and sales of vinyl went up thanks to that.  Descendents will be playing at Riot Fest, and they did some touring now.  LCD Soundsystem played their final show.  Alkaline Trio finished up recording the new old songs re-imagined.  Matt Skiba recorded another solo album.  Lawrence Arms might finally release their dvd from 2 years ago.  Rise Against covered Face to Face and Face to Face covered Rise Against. Just a few of the highlights from the past month. It was a good month to be a music fan as releases came out from Foo Fighters, TV on the Radio, Dave Matthews Band, Paul Simon, Thursday, John Oates, Meat Puppets, Gorillaz, Wayne Brady, Brandi Carlilie, Bowling for Soup, Silverstein, and others.  Music Releases for April 2011 is where you can check check out all the rest.  Lots of things happening in April, and let's see what the month of May will bring us.

Stephen's Music of the Week:  A full set from the band, Bayside.  I just can't get enough of this band.  They play with a great punk rock style that includes a face melting guitar solo from time to time.  If you like songs about relationships and life, check this band out.

One and Done

I was listening to Texas is the Reason's "Do You Know Who You Are? (Revelation), and got to thinking is this the best "one shot" album.  They only had one full length, and a couple of split albums, but in essence they had this one great album.  So if you had to choose one album by a band as their only release what album would you choose?

Here are some of my own choices, and I want to hear your thoughts!

Alkaline Trio "Goddamit"  This is really the trio at their best.  I'm a sucker for early stuff, but it's just so full of raw energy, and the passion behind the songs is what gets me.

Get Up Kids "Something to Write Home About"  If you want an album to play when you to sing about girls and relationships, this is the album to play. I think the songs have aged well because I still enjoy them now.

The Beatles "Rubber Soul"  This is where the Beatles really crafted their sound, and set the stage for them to truly set the bar for bands to come.  They took their music to a new level with this.

Weezer "Pinkerton"  To think this was such a failure when it first came out, but is now cited as an influence from lots of alternative and punk rock bands is amazing.  Yet again another just bitter album.  Maybe I'm just bitter? And that's why I love this type of stuff.

Just a few of my choices, and I know these bands have made lots of music, and I wouldn't want them to have made just one album, but it's fun to think about!

Shameless Plug 8- Let's shred on the guitar!!!

Look at this guitarist!
In honor of April being International Guitar Month, I found this link to Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists. I'll be talking about my own guitar influences, some of the guitarists mentioned here, and just some overall thoughts about the guitar.

No Bueno! es muy Bueno!

I'm happy to let No Bueno! as a part of my blog.  Jay Ludemann had read a review of the band Elway, and asked if I would be up for giving them some press, which I love.  Here's what the band had to say about themselves.

"No Bueno! is a punk/rock band out of Littleton, CO consisting of four guys that listen to a lot punk music. They were formed in the summer ’08 after several Denver bands called it quits. The band writes songs that blend rich harmonies over powerful and infectiously catchy songs."
Matt Whitesides-Vocals, Guitar
J. Ludemann-Guitar
Tyler Kurchinski-Drums
Scott Ridl-Bass, Backing Vocals
"Members of the band have shared the stage with Blink 182, Unwritten Law, Face to Face, Zebrahead, the Misfits, Authority Zero, Death by Stereo, A Wilhelm Scream to name a few.
The bands first Self Titled EP was recorded and mastered at the Blasting Room with Felipe Patino, (Rise Against, Nofx, Propaghandi) and Mastered by Jason Livermore(Rise Against, Less Than JakeMxPx)

Their 2nd EP "Bleeding Hearts Disease" was recorded at Green Door Studios in Denver, once again with Felipe Patino, and mastered at the Blasting Room by Jason Livermore.
On the bands first full album, they choose to go to Black in Bluhm studios in Denver with Chris Fogal from the Gamits at the helm. Recording for the "as yet untitled" full length begins this May."

Got a chance to listen to their EP "Bleeding Hearts Disease" and it starts out kicking you in the face with some great punk rock.  Going to do my live review of this, so sit back and enjoy.  5 punk rock songs that get my head bopping and wanting to fist pump.
The vocals have the throaty sound that I love in punk rock.  The guitars are chugging along nicely and distorted.  Drumming and bass are bringing up the backbone to give this band a sound like a band I would definitely listen to.  The kids could fist pump to No Bueno!  On the first song, Summer Nights, there's a great hand clapping part, which who doesn't love to clap along to a song??  I'm digging the guitars on the second song, Never Let Go.  The vocals are very strong on this one as well.  A little acoustic start to, Almost Gone, but then the song kicks it in, and we're rocking.  Singing reminds me of Tim from Rise Against, which should be a great compliment.  Drumming really helps the band chug along in their sound.  He gets a great chance to shine in the breakdown part of this third song.  It's Not Over brings the EP to a close, but leaves you wanting more.  You don't want it to be over!  See what I did there!!  Hopefully the band can get their full length out soon, and we'll get to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Don't believe me that their music rocks, go listen for yourself.

Go see some video footage of them rocking out too.

Shameless Plug 7- Tell us your life story

Drop the Needle "Tell us the history of your band in your own words"
With the Foo Fighters releasing their documentary, it got me thinking about what bands have done a great job of presenting themselves that way.  I'll be discussing this and of course some music news in the Shameless Plug.  Recommended reading: The Dirt by Motley Crue, Everybody Wants Some: Van Halen Saga by Ian Christie, and To Hell and Back by Meatloaf. Also watch Ramones Raw and End of the Century: Story of the Ramones.

Music News:

Dave Hause "Time Will Tell" video
If you can't stand the sight of blood, don't watch this video.  Based on a classic old film shaving scene in a movie.

Wonder Years announce a new album
Look for it to come out on June 14th, 2011 on Hopeless Records.

Rise Against Covers Face to Face and vice versa
A cool split 7 inch happening that Rise Against will cover "Blind" and Face to Face will cover "The Good Left Undone."

Lawrence Arms FINALLY releasing 10th Anniversary Show
This was talked about two summers ago, so not sure I should get the hopes up until there's a DEFINITE release date.

Taking Back Sunday Pre-Order
The old Taking Back Sunday members release a new album entitled Taking Back Sunday.

Song of the Week:
Face to Face bring back their punk rock sound with a new album coming out in May, and this track goes to show they've not lost a step since their last release in 2002.  Excited to hear the full album, and hope you enjoy it too!

Rock of Ages...I went to a musical.

Writing about a musical?  Am I going to lose my man card??? Am I losing my street cred with the punk rock community????  OH NO!!!  Yes, I'm writing a short, brief,  not very detail, not well thought out, but hey it's something music related.  I went to the Rock of Ages show last night with my mom, aunt, and uncle.  My aunt is in love with Constantine Maroulis, who I will admit could sing the heck out of some of these songs.  The music is really what brought me to this show.

I like some of these classic hits, and thought it would be fun to see how they would be played out.  The story of the show I didn't think was that good.  You had the main guy trying to get the girl, which he does.  SPOILER!!  You had a German guy trying to get the Sunset Strip rid of sex, drugs, and rock and roll.  You had two dudes fall for each other after working in the bourbon room for years.  You had a girl trying to find her dream, and she ends up with a kid and the main guy.  That's about the story right there.  Insert cheesy jokes, 80's songs, and dance numbers, and you've seen the musical.

It had hits like "Any Way You Want It", "Cum on Feel the Noise", "We're Not Gonna Take It", "Can't Fight this Feeling", and yea...lots more that I don't care to write out. Yes "Don't Stop Believing" was the final number, and I got to thinking am I watching Glee???  Just with a lot more racier jokes.  And a live rock band on stage, which was cool.  Can't imagine being a band and just being up there the whole time though!

Also, it was nice that the cast was able to stop after the show, and take time to say hi to people and what not.  I know my aunt never thought she would be taking a picture with Mr. Maroulis, but she did, and my uncle even talked to him a little bit about American Idol. So I was happy they got to experience something like that, and like I said it was a cheese-tastic time.

Record Store Day 2011

Wanted to give some love to this awesome day that seems to get bigger each year.  Who knew that vinyl would still be around and possibly become more popular now?  I own lots of vinyl in my book. I have colored vinyl, picture disks, and the classics that you should have in your collection.  I did listen to some of the vinyl, but most of the time I just collect it so I can say "yea I have that on record."  The colored vinyl is pretty awesome.   There are definitely stand outs in my collection that you will see below.  These are just a few of the gems. I would love to show off my collection, and want to hear your gems as well.

Shimmercore--- Making your ears drone.

Shimmercore is an up and coming band here in Indianapolis that was brought to my attention by a friend.  I asked the band to describe themselves and give me some history of the band, and here is what they wrote.
SHIMMERCORE BIO

"Since 2000, Mike Contreras has been performing and recording music in the Indianapolis, Indiana area with several bands including Pop Lolita, Red Light Driver, Playboy Psychonauts, The Shivers, Thee Pernicious UniCats, The George Fourmen Thrill, Lunar Event, The Shake Weights, and SP3LL. Now under the Shimmercore moniker, a new solo album, "Dronelands" is due to drop in mid-May 2011. The 13 song album can be described as feedback ballads for wayward shoegazers.

In the middle of September 2010, Mike decided to start writing and recording a concept album of drone-pop tunes in the vein of the Jesus and Mary Chain, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spacemen 3, and the Velvet Underground. Having spent the last few years learning and practicing multiple instruments, including but not limited to drums, sitar, and accordion, the timing seemed perfect for applying this newly acquired musicianship to sound engineering and producing a full length album. Each song took an average of 2-3 hours to write and record which left a lot of time for mixing the right tones and sounds. In the end, the realization of Dronelands was completed by mid-January 2011.

There are currently no plans for a show booking or tour dates, however, various musicians in the local Indianapolis scene have expressed interest in helping the songs of Dronelands become fully realized in a live venue format."

Mike gave me a copy of the upcoming release, and wanted to give my thoughts on it.  Right away I can see this whole 80's Depeche Mode type sound.  Full of instruments all doing their own thing.  The vocals are kind of there in the background, but still understandable.  I like the reverb and echo sound happening on the vocals.  It gives you that classic feel of old school music.  Such a different thing to do since most people want everything to be up to date, and all in the now.  But Shimmercore is recognizing how good that sound of the drone pop can be.  The Cure would be very pleased with the vibe of this record.  On Female Jesus, there's an interesting sense of feedback that provides a steady noise adding to the darkness of the song.  There's a guitar adding a little bit of flair yet again adding to the darkness.  A standout track in my mind.

I would make the comparison of this album to Radiohead's latest album in that with the right environment, you could really enjoy this album.  I could picture a basement show with the lights down low focused on the band, people slowly moving with each other, eyes closed images flashing across our minds, listening for all the instruments, and taking it all in.

With Shimmercore having this unique sound going, I'd love to see what they could do in the music scene here, and what people would react to the music.  I think you could get a good crowd behind it one that embraces that darker sound of music, and loves the old school feel.

Pearl Jam- Band March Madness Champion

Well time to crown Pearl Jam as the Band March Madness champion. They got the votes to come through, and made it through a tough bracket of competition. I've never claimed to be a Pearl Jam fan, but I did say the champ would get a blog post, so here we go.

While I am not a fan of the band, I can tolerate Betterman, so here's an old school video of that song.

I don't know much about the band, but I do realize they're a huge band in rock music. And they get great attention for refusing to bend. They seem like the band that will stick to what they want to do, and I respect them for that. They do have great music, and songs that people really latch on to, another respect point. So maybe I can throw Pearl Jam into that category of mine that is respect the band, but don't listen to them. I know a weird category, but hey I'm giving them credit for something. And they snuck through the Band March Madness, so once again kudos to them, and let' see them defend their title next year.

Elway- We're NOT talking the quarterback here

I got my hands on a copy of the single they've put out which features three songs, if you like the Gamits, Lawrence Arms, or Alkaline Trio, you'll love this band.  Good bar punk rock sound.  Booming choruses that you can sing along with, and verses that build up to those booming choruses.
Straight out of the facebook profile this is how Elway describes themselves:

"Elway is an American punk rock band from Fort Collins, Colorado. Their sound is a unique and inebriated take on a time-tested formula: aggressive punk rock with soaring melodies coupled with lyrics ranging from that of the sad sap to the indignant atheist with a bevy of homespun dick jokes."

I wanted to do another live review. Posting the thoughts I have of the songs as I'm listening to them right now.  It's all about living in the now, and that's what I think a music review should be.

Passing Days-  Song that blends all things together.  Soft and quiet verse that has some cool guitar leads happening.  Drums beat along to the beat, and give you something to bounce with.  Really enjoying the singers voice, and you can't a good "whoa" in a short bridge section.  Ends with just singing and guitar a cool way to end a song.

Patrick's Scarf is so Douche-   Head bopping along to the beat of the beginning of this song.  The singing once again catches my attention.  I love an unique singing voice, and that's what I would call this singer's voice.  Gang vocals on the chorus is fantastic.  A great staple of this type of sound.

Wolf Shirt-  Singing reminds me of Chris from the Lawrence Arms.  A more melodic song in my mind.  A little more mellow than the other two songs in this single. Still a great song.

Overall, I'm excited for more music to come from Elway.  Go find them on facebook, like them, and check out the music yourself.

Things that the Foo Fighters Doc Taught Me

A little heavy on the Foo Fighters this week, but when you have a documentary and new album coming out, you get to enjoy the perks of being featured on my blog.  So bands and musicians out there release an album and movie, and you got the attention of me.

But I just wanted to talk a little bit about some things that I happened that I never knew about with the Foo Fighters.

  • The first album started out as a cassette tape that Dave Grohl made during a break in Nirvana.  And he played all the parts on it.  To me that's just crazy, and it's even more amazing how good that album sounds.  To think one person made it that has to blow your mind!

  • Pat Smear was an on and off again member. Almost came back full time when Chris Shiflett first came to the band.

  • William Goldsmith the first drummer got a conference call to tell him he was no longer needed, but was needed to tour for the Colour and the Shape.  Dave actually had to record new drum parts for that album because he didn't feel that they were right.

  • Franz Stahl, guitarist for Scream, which Grohl was a part of in his early days.  Franz wasn't working out as guitarist, and got a call as well to stop playing with the band. That's about the only bad thing I've heard about the band, they don't exactly know how to kick a member out the right way. But if that's the only bad thing, then you're doing something right.

  • Foo Fighters went as a three piece for a short time, but we all know and love the four piece two guitar attack, which really cranks up the sound for them.

  • They held auditions for the guitar player, and Shiflett came in and nailed it.  He got the part, and of course that's been the lineup ever since.

  • Finally just thinking about the musicians and where they came from is interesting and funny to me.  Let's start with Grohl, he drummed for Nirvana yes we all know that, but he also drummed with Scream, a hardcore punk band in DC.  And he almost played with Tom Petty as the full time drummer.  Can you imagine Grohl playing drums with Tom Petty?? He did play a one time gig with him on SNL.

  • Then we have Taylor Hawkins, who drummed with Alanis Morissette, who was obviously a huge artist back in the 90's.  He wanted to join a true band, and took that call right away.

  • Nate Mendel, came from Sunny Day Real Estate, emo kings of the 90's. He almost went back to the band, when they reunited in 99, but knew that Foo Fighters was the right place for him.

  • William Goldsmith was the drummer there for Sunny Day Real Estate, so interesting that they were part of that emo scene, and were part of the rock scene as well.

  • Finally, Chris Shiflett was part of No Use For A Name.  Anyone that really knows me, knows that NUFAN was one of my first punk bands that I loved.  To think he came from that punk scene to this whole huge rock scene is an amazing story.

Maybe that's why the Foo is such a great band.  You have all these influences and experiences coming together.  Foo Fighters seem to have a great relationship with each other, through the good and bad.  That's another stamp on a great band.  I will say once again the new album is fantastic, so go and check it out as soon as you can or when it comes out Tuesday.

Foo Fighters "Wasting Light" Listening Party

Got my hands on a copy of the latest Foo Fighters album, which I have been eagerly anticipating. I've never done this before, but I thought I'd do a live review. I'm going to listen to the album, and post my thoughts on songs as they come.  A live play by play if you will.  Let me know what you think of the album if you get a chance to listen to it as well, and give me an album you would want me to review this way as well.  I know it's a different and cool way to review one.

Let's crank it up.
Got the headphones on, so I can listen to everything crystal clear!

Bridge Burning-  Love the intensity starting off in this song.  The drums are just kicking, and the guitars are rocking out.  Dave's vocals are coming through and make me think of the older albums a bit.  Love the way the vocals can get so quiet and loud, but are delivered powerfully.  Way to open the album.

Rope-  Single off the album that I've heard a few times. Like the harmony between Taylor and Dave on singing in the verse.  "Give me some rope I'm coming loose, I'm pulling for you" is a cool line that makes me think you just need that person in your life that you can count on.  The bridge part is sweet with all the instruments working together like the well oiled machine that is the Foo Fighters.  Drums once again just have an intensity that I think has been missing from past albums.

Dear Rosemary-  Feels a bit different from the typical Foo Fighters song, but still hits you hard like a FF song.   Like the layers of guitars.  Feels like there's more than just the three guitars playing.  Cool singing interaction between Bob Mould, Husker Du fame, and Dave Grohl in the bridge before the final chorus.

So far so good.
Great opening to the album.
Three songs that really set the stage.
Glad I put the headphones on for this album, so I can hear everything clear.

White Limo-  Hard rocking song that has some cool vocal effect on it.  The drums keep hitting it home for me.  Just love to hear Taylor play them.  And the guitars are cranking it out with some great distortion.  Fun middle of the road song.

Arlandria-  Vocals and guitar start this song which I think is a great way to start out.  I like the way Dave sings with just a guitar.  Cool bass lines running through the chorus and the verses.  First time I really heard the bass come out in this album.  Loving the chorus, I think Dave is singing it just right for the song.  Once again the quiet and loud is such a great effect that the Foo Fighters always seem to nail.

These Days-  Another guitar and vocals introduction to the song.  Sort of mellow song that just rocks along.  Makes me think a little like this song would be "Times like these." Not a bad thing at all, just trying to match up what I'm thinking.  The chorus knocks it up a notch.  Everything kicks in, and gets you moving.  Brings it back down for the verse after the bridge.  Great outro to get rocking again.

I'd put Arlandria and These Days as a two pack.
Same thing going on in them and a mellow drop to the album.

Back and Forth-  Loving the guitar work before the chorus.  Almost a "punky" type chorus, which is something different the Foo would be doing.  Sounds a bit like the typical Foo sound with guitar variations here and there that really catch your ear.  listen for that guitar work in the pre chorus, just sounds really cool.

A Matter of Time-  Some different sounds working in the pre chorus.  Like the lead guitar in the verse.  Sounds like Taylor is singing some more with Dave, and they are definitely in harmony with each other.  Liking the vocals like that.  Chorus kicks in like a chorus should.  Definitely some guitar work going on that you need to listen for.

Miss the Misery-  Rocking introduction with some distorted guitars.  Things step back a little bit for the verse, and Dave's singing takes the front.  Cool breakdown/bridge part, where all the instruments get a chance to show off.  Back to the chorus, and we're rocking it again.

I Should Have Known-  A slower song that sounds like the Skin and Bones type sound.  Picks up a little bit, but almost feels like a slow jazzy song.  Strings are heard in the background giving the song the jazzy feel.  Bass can really be heard in parts, fun to hear it like that.

Walk-  Starting off slow and quiet, but everything kicks in, and we get the rocking.  Typical Foo song that has everything right there so you can hear the guitars, bass, drums, and singing.  Gets me moving once again.  head rocking  and feeling good!  Closing the album and leaving on a high note.  "i'm dancing on my grave"  another great line by the godlike genius.

Overall, I'm happy with this effort. I think the Foo really brought it up a notch, and this is better than the past album. There's a bit of different things happening, and I felt like they didn't want to hold back on ideas.  There are a few slower songs, but they still hold their place in the Foo catalog.  It's cool knowing that this was recorded analog and old school.  Just on a first listen, I would place this in the top half of albums by Foo Fighters.

The Fallow- Something for Everyone!

I had the pleasure of seeing these guys at Six Bands for Six Bucks, and they had a great different sound I thought.  Kind of Foo Fighters-ish, but with a little variety to it.  I'm glad I got to talk with them about their band, and can't wait to see them again live.
The Fallow on Facebook
The Fallow on Youtube

Tell us the history of the band, and members of it.
thefallow. started out as an acoustic solo project from singer/songwriter ryan m. brewer. over the life of the band...we have gone through a number of personnel changes, but the main goal has always been to write and perform the best pop rock music possible. the version of thefallow. that is currently touring is ryan m. brewer (vocals, acoustic guitars) and levi lowe (acoustic guitars, percussion).

Bands that influence you.
i think the music is influenced greatly by the bands i've listened to for years. the get up kids, dashboard confessional, say anything, the weakerthans. but i think it's veiled enough by newer influences that you may not notice those older ones.

Best show you've played.
we've had the honor to play a lot of great shows with this band. anything we've played with the muncie amvets has been awesome. rickyleepotts.com presents "6 bands for 6 bucks" was absolutely fantastic.

Worst show you've played.
it's hard for me to classify a show as "the worst". because it's such a kickass thing to be able to do what it is i get to do. to have people show up and give a shit about the music that comes out of my brain is simply beautiful. that being said...we've played to just my girlfriend before. literally. even the soundman left.

Top Five Albums from whoever would like to answer.
i can't really put these in order...but i'll give you a list.
the who - who's next
the get up kids - guilt show
dashboard confessional - the swiss army romance
the format - dog problems
death cab for cutie - transatlanticism

Bands you would love to play a show with.
right now? the get up kids. mumford and sonsregina spektor. i think we'd mesh well with either band.

Best thing about the music scene here in Indy.
there's a lot of talent going on out there. a lot of original music looking for a place to be released.

Something you would improve about the music scene here in Indy.
i wish there were more venues willing to give original music a try. we CAN get asses in the door and feet on the floor.

Final thoughts.
really appreciate the opportunity to talk with you. we love what you're doing for local music. keep it up and keep in touch!
