Shimmercore is an up and coming band here in Indianapolis that was brought to my attention by a friend. I asked the band to describe themselves and give me some history of the band, and here is what they wrote.
SHIMMERCORE BIO
"Since 2000, Mike Contreras has been performing and recording music in the Indianapolis, Indiana area with several bands including Pop Lolita, Red Light Driver, Playboy Psychonauts, The Shivers, Thee Pernicious UniCats, The George Fourmen Thrill, Lunar Event, The Shake Weights, and SP3LL. Now under the Shimmercore moniker, a new solo album, "Dronelands" is due to drop in mid-May 2011. The 13 song album can be described as feedback ballads for wayward shoegazers.
In the middle of September 2010, Mike decided to start writing and recording a concept album of drone-pop tunes in the vein of the Jesus and Mary Chain, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spacemen 3, and the Velvet Underground. Having spent the last few years learning and practicing multiple instruments, including but not limited to drums, sitar, and accordion, the timing seemed perfect for applying this newly acquired musicianship to sound engineering and producing a full length album. Each song took an average of 2-3 hours to write and record which left a lot of time for mixing the right tones and sounds. In the end, the realization of Dronelands was completed by mid-January 2011.
There are currently no plans for a show booking or tour dates, however, various musicians in the local Indianapolis scene have expressed interest in helping the songs of Dronelands become fully realized in a live venue format."
Mike gave me a copy of the upcoming release, and wanted to give my thoughts on it. Right away I can see this whole 80's Depeche Mode type sound. Full of instruments all doing their own thing. The vocals are kind of there in the background, but still understandable. I like the reverb and echo sound happening on the vocals. It gives you that classic feel of old school music. Such a different thing to do since most people want everything to be up to date, and all in the now. But Shimmercore is recognizing how good that sound of the drone pop can be. The Cure would be very pleased with the vibe of this record. On Female Jesus, there's an interesting sense of feedback that provides a steady noise adding to the darkness of the song. There's a guitar adding a little bit of flair yet again adding to the darkness. A standout track in my mind.
I would make the comparison of this album to Radiohead's latest album in that with the right environment, you could really enjoy this album. I could picture a basement show with the lights down low focused on the band, people slowly moving with each other, eyes closed images flashing across our minds, listening for all the instruments, and taking it all in.
With Shimmercore having this unique sound going, I'd love to see what they could do in the music scene here, and what people would react to the music. I think you could get a good crowd behind it one that embraces that darker sound of music, and loves the old school feel.
