Chris Fogal talks about touring

Can't believe I got to score an interview like this!  I got turned on to this band recently, and was glad to see they're back together touring.  Touring is what we decided to focus on. I love the touring aspect of a band, so I decided that would be a great focus.

Also if you've never heard of the Gamits, here's a brief introduction to the band, and I've included their band camp page so you can go listen to some of their music.
"The Gamits are a band from Denver, Colorado who formed in 1996, and were hailed as "America's best hidden pop/punk secret".[1] The band was disbanded in 2005 due to the members wishing to participate in and start other projects, but regrouped in late 2009. The current line-up is Chris Fogal on guitar and vocals, Forrest Bartosh on drums and Scott Weigel on bass and background vocals."

Best tour story you have.
Maybe not the best but one of most memorable times was once when we were crossing the border fromHolland to Belgium. ( I think it was Belgium ) The important thing is that we were on our way from Holland and being a band they assumed we had drugs in the van. We were smarter than that and out of two whole bands there was not a drug of any kind to be found. We had partied super hard the night before because the tour was coming to an end. We were all really haggard and had to pee like crazy. The border patrol stopped us and kept us there for 2 or 3 hours while they systematically tore apart the van and strip searched us one by one. We had to get totally naked and spread eagle against the wall! Then we had to unpack all our bags and lay every item out on a table for them to examine ( smell ) If you can imagine what a bag full of month old tour socks smells like then you can imagine how bad it sucks to have their job at that moment. The best part was that Forrest, our drummer, had been "sharpeed" the night before with all kinds of crazy shit. It was right after 9 / 11 and I remember some of the artwork had the twin towers and it said " never forget! " underneath them and then there was the " I love dick " or whatever. There was some really funny stuff on him. He got to show off all his new ink to the border patrol! Anyway, they didn't find any humor or any drugs but I have this story to tell so I win!

Worst tour story.
I think that one answers both these questions! Best of times, worst of times kind of thing.

Favorite songs to play live.
Right now I think "Love Suicidal" is a favorite for all of us. Anything off the new album is fun right now.

And bands you would want to play a show with.
Yeah Red City Radio and Green Day so we can show them how a real rock trio is supposed to work.

Any other final thoughts about the touring aspect of your band.
Well we love to do a good tour and that is why we are still at it. To write songs and play them for people. Traveling in a band has got to be one of the best ways to see the world, next to being Anthony Bourdain or someone like that. You get to go places where most tourists don't and you get to meet people who almost instantly are your good friends and they want to take you everywhere and tell you everything about their town or city or country. It's the best even if you are in a place that might not be paradise and you might not have much money in your pocket.

Chris Fogal- Guitarist and Vocalist for the band

Here's a brief introduction to the band, and I've included their band camp page so you can go listen to some of their music.

Jana J. Bassist for the Elky Summers

Jana slappin' da bass!

I had the pleasure of seeing this all girl rock band back a bit ago when I was going to check out another all girl rock band.  It was quite the all girl rocking night.  This band, the Elky Summers, was quite excellent.  They had a great classic sound, and I was definitely interested in hearing more from them.  So I decided to email the bassist of this lovely band, and ask her some questions.  Here is that exchange. Enjoy and check out the Elky Summers when they come to your town!  the Elky Summers

Tell me what you're doing musically.

Currently I play bass in a four piece all girl Garage Band Called The Elky Summers out of Fort Wayne Indiana. We just made another pressing of our first Ep Elky Summers #1. We have been selling so many we can hardly keep up with the demand. We hand screen and package each disc. We are DIY kind of band. We print our own tee-shirts and package our own music. It keeps the cost down for everyone.

How did you get into music?

Growing up I had a much older brother who was into lots of great music such as The Dead Milkmen, Motley Crue, The Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Anthrax, Metallica, and Social Distortion to name a few. He also played guitar. So when I was 13, my brother gave me my very first guitar. He showed me some power chords, which was all I needed to play punk guitar. I played on and off for years but nothing serious until now.

What music influences you?

Lots of music influences me, I cannot narrow it down to just one genre. Everything from hip hop, punk, to old school country. Basically what it boils down to is every band I've ever seen or heard.

Top Five Albums if you had to choose.

1. Fugazi- 13 Songs
2. The Descendents -Sommery
3. Atmosphere - You can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having
4. Social Distortion -Live at The Roxy
5. The Kills- Midnight Boom

What do you think of the music scene in your town or locally?

Fort Wayne has one of the best music scenes there is. There are so many bands here right now. Its not a genre specific scene either, everyone is doing there own thing and not trying to rip each other off. There are some really great venues as well. In any one night you could go see metal bands, punk bands, garage band or even country bands. Each venue offers a variety, they don't stick to just one genre.

What would be better about the music scene overall?

For all that is happening in the scene right now, there is even more talking about making music then actual making of music. And of course there are always haters who dog other musicians.

Final thoughts.

Final thoughts? Is this like Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy??
Here's a Jack Handy quote provided by me. "Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, you'll be a mile from them, and you'll have their shoes."

Thank you so much to Miss Jana for sharing her thoughts and giving us insight into the life of a rocking bassist.  I hope to check the Elky Summers out soon, and definitely will be able to say hey you're part of my blog now.

A Squared Industries

I was browsing through the world of facebook trying to pin down people to feature on this blog for the local music scene, and it came to me that I kept seeing invites from A Squared Industries and I saw some shows they're involved with. Like Queens of the Stone Age at the Vogue, which is sold out. To me seeing a show sold out in Indy is awesome, and so I decided I should reach out and get in contact with the head of this promotion, Andy Skinner.

He gave me this link to a short interview that he and his wife did. They founded this promotion together, and they work hard to get the music scene going here in Indy. It's like I've said before, I know there's a good vibe here in town, and people just need to get out and see it. Just in this few minutes, you can tell that these two amazing people are creating something. I know there are others involved too, and those people are creating something. That is what it takes spreading the word, and getting people involved, that's what a music community, and just a community should be about. I hope you take the time, watch the video, and see what I see. I hope that things will continue to happen in this city, and music will be something amazing here in town. More bands can come here, local bands can get out and tour, promoters can say hey that Indy place is a great place to play, and we can all make this a vibrant music scene.

Be sure to check out their site for the latest music happenings in town!

Update for Music Music Music

I know I've been a bit lax with real lengthy posts about music, and I'm getting out to bands right now, so that I can have more music posted on here. I'm also putting the word out more about my podcast, and hope to get that up and running. I've enjoyed putting together the band march madness, and that's taken up the month of March for blogging. But the wheels are moving forward to get local bands on here, and hopefully some national ones. If I can't be making music, I want to be writing about it, and helping out bands to get their names out there. Continue to support music, get out to shows, listen to songs, tell people to check out songs, and live out music.

Band March Madness- Introduction

Welcome everyone to the true March Madness Tourney.  I will be presenting the matchups, and you can message me on facebook on what teams you would want to move on.  From there I'll see what teams get the most votes, and put them in the second round, and so on.  Also I did set up matchups that I think will be good together.  Therefore, each round will be set up by me, and not by seeds.  You can feel free to insert your own seeding.  (that's what she said?)  I hope we can get some great participation, so feel free to share this with anyone you think might be interested.

So what's at stake here, whatever band makes it all the way to the final will be crowned as the best band!!  That's a lot of pride.  And another special prize that will be announced when the tourney is over.

I am definitely looking forward to this, and just like the regular tourney, I think it will get people talking about music in a different way.  The brackets will be coming in four different posts, so you can take a little bit of time and look at the bands in it.  Can't wait to see who's moving on!

Bands to Keep an Eye On

I've been trying to find some new stuff to listen to, which seems to get harder because I can't find those bands that really hit me.  I know what I want in music, and I'm always looking for that.  Even when I write something, it has to move me, and make me feel something.  Luckily I've come across three bands that have hit me, and I wanted to make you aware of them to check out.

First off, I got around to listening to Red City Radio. If you like someone like Hot Water Music, you'll like this band. Great gruff vocals that you can sing along with.  Great guitar stuff going on, and songs about life that you can relate to.

Here's their latest video and song "Spinning in Circles is a Gateway Drug." It comes off their newest album, the Dangers of Standing Still.

Secondly, I'd like you to check out Polar Bear Club. They're another band like Red City Radio. Been around a couple of years, touring a lot, and making great albums.

Here's a live video featuring the song "Most Miserable Life"

Lastly, here's a 7 year old interviewing the band the Swellers. it doesn't get any cuter than this. The band is rocking too.
